Winter Meeting and Governor’s
Inaugural Activities
Friday, January 12 and 13, 2007

Governor Ted Strickland presents Lieutenant
Governor Lee Fisher with the
Executive Order of the Ohio
Commodore making him an Honorary Cabinet member
during the
reception at the Capital Club on Friday evening, January 12, 2007.
The annual winter
induction dinner and meeting activities were held in Columbus in conjunction
with the Inauguration of Ohio’s 68th Governor Ted Strickland and Lt.
Governor Lee Fisher. More than 120 members and their guests attended the
reception and new member induction dinner on Friday evening, January 12, at the
Capital Club. It was the best attended winter induction dinner held in several
years.
Governor Strickland
and Lt. Governor Fisher – along with Peggy Zone Fisher and their children –
stopped by the induction reception to meet and mingle with members and guests.
This marked the first time in many years that both elected officials attended
the Commodores’ annual event. With help from Grand Commodore Bud Winzenried,
Gov. Strickland inducted Lt. Governor Fisher into the organization as an
Honorary Cabinet member. Afterward, the Governor and Lt. Governor had a group
photo taken with the 18 new member inductees. The induction ceremony followed
dinner where the new members were formally inducted into the organization.

The Ohio
Commodores’ annual winter meeting was held on Saturday morning, January 13, in
the Scarlet and Gray Room at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Columbus.
Following the board meeting, a presentation was given by featured speaker
Commodore Ed Burghard, executive director of the Ohio Business Development
Coalition (OBDC).
The purpose of
Burghard’s presentation was to give an overview of his proposal on how the
Commodore members can best assist the OBDC in its role to effectively market the
benefits of doing business in Ohio by generating “….compelling local proposals
to win more deals”. You can access
Burghard’s presentation to learn more about his proposal.
The three key reasons for supporting this initiative
include:
1.
On mission. This program contributes to the economic
growth and development of Ohio by delivering a new capability that will help
economic development professionals make an even stronger case for capital
investment in Ohio.
2.
Positions the Commodores in a leadership role. Co-branding
this program will increase awareness of the Commodores within the economic
development community and with the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD).
Populating the network with as many Commodore members as possible helps
continuously reinforce the important enabling role played by the organization.
3.
Offers potential to recruit future Commodore candidates.
The expectation is the current Commodore membership will help kick-start the
network, but in order to have a robust program the members will need to recruit
additional experts who currently are not Commodores, but have an interest or
passion in supporting economic development. Identified stars from this group
have a strong potential to be considered for Commodore membership
recommendation.
Following the board
meeting and Ed Burghard’s presentation, Commodore members participated at the
Governor and Lt. Governor’s Inaugural swearing-in ceremony on the Statehouse
steps. Following the swearing-in ceremony, Commodore members also helped to
facilitate the receiving line in the Atrium where members of the public had
photos taken with the Governor, Lt. Governor and First Ladies.
